Full-Time Street Department Laborer
Job Summary
The Public Works Laborer works under the direct supervision of the Public Works Foreman in the assigned location. Most of the work is done outside, regardless of weather conditions, and involves responding to weather-related or other emergencies. The job involves working with and being exposed to potentially hazardous materials associated with managing municipal stormwater such as chemicals, gases, and sludge as well as the use of a variety of tools and the operation of heavy street/sewer-related machinery. The job involves lifting and working with moving parts. Certain aspects of the job will require special training and/or experience.
Responsibilities and Duties
Assist with street-related operations and maintenance; Operate all equipment and machinery related to the needs of all Public Works functions; Assist to ensure all equipment is properly maintained, cleaned, and ready for immediate use; Assist with the operation, alteration, non-major repair, and maintenance of all municipally owned buildings; Assist with the maintenance, and repair of storm drains, runs, etc.; Follow all safety rules and regulations; Must be able to lift fifty (50) pounds; Assist Town personnel with emergencies (when required); Conduct lawn care and building/grounds maintenance; Conduct snow and ice removal including plowing of municipal lots, streets, and sidewalks; Obtain PennDOT Flagger Card; Perform such other duties that may be assigned by the Town Manager and Assistant Manager.
Knowledge and Skills
Working knowledge of each Public Works function; Ability to follow instructions and to carry out assignments to completion; Ability to understand and carry out written and/or oral instructions; SHALL be able to work independently; Have the safety skills necessary to work safely and responsibly; Ability to maintain effective relations with other Town employees and conduct themselves professionally with the public while representing the Town of Greenville.
Licenses, Registrations, and Certificates Required
Pennsylvania Driver’s License or current driver’s license from another state.
Education, Training, and Experience Required
High School diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.); Public Works experience preferred.
Physical Requirements and Work Environment
Daily duties include a complete regimen of physical activity including bending, climbing, crouching, crawling, kneeling, pulling, pushing, reaching, and turning. Hiree will be performing some duties in confined spaces, near and/or in contact with biologically hazardous materials, chemicals, solvents, and cleaners. The Town reserves the right to require a physical examination by a physician of its choosing. Management reserves the right to add, modify, change, or rescind work assignments as needed.
